So this is the third issue in the ongoing 8House series and yet it's so far removed from the previous two that it could easily be mistaken for a whole different story (which it kind of is). I knew going into this that the third one in the series was vastly different to that of the first two and so I was ready for the change, but I imagine if you were not then it would be highly jarring. We change the duo in this issue to Brandon Graham (story) and Xurxo Penalta (art) which is another interesting combo, but this story had a far more 'sci-fi' feel to it than Fantasy as the last 2 have been.
So, the artwork of this is still very beautiful at times. We get to see a LOT of big city scenes and sweeping, towering, crazy architecture which i loved as I definitely think that Penalta has a flair and eye for drawing buildings and landscapes. There were some moments within this where the story totally flipped so that the pages were upside-down and the colour palettes had to also change and adapt with this to give the vibe of a whole new place, all of this I thought was done very well and the slick, clear line-work and bold blocky colours worked with the streamlined, science-y vibe.
My only complaint with the art of this is the faces. I didn't love the over-exaggerated expressions and the continual use of 'goldfish' face (basically just a mouth hanging open - no other expression). I didn't hate the character design, but it's clear to me that the artist has much more talent for world design than for people (as many people do, myself included) and so whilst it's not fab, alongside the sweeping panoramas the art works.
The story in this issue was more confused. The story takes on a much more sci-fi feel with a young girl being the main character and entering into all sorts of odd experimental, futuristic tech and concepts. We see her as she becomes another person in another place and is then told she must transport something she's retrieved from the aliens to another part of the world.
We don't learn a lot other than that this world is big, expansive and full of odd things. Creatures, minerals and strange aliens all seem to exist and it's a pretty messed up place in terms of the people who inhabit it. We also know there was, at some point (or maybe ongoing) a big war...
I didn't like this quite as much as the previous 2 issues, but it does still intrigue me. I wonder if we will return to this world and the previous as the series goes on because I know that somehow all these stories and people must link and tie together. At the moment I'm unsure how... but I can't wait to see. 3*s for this one overall :)
